The Mining Technician program is designed to prepare students for a career in the mining industry, specifically targeting geotechnical positions within Idaho's diverse mining sector. This program will focus on developing theoretical knowledge and technical skills, equipping graduates with the tools needed to be a successful employee in the mining industry. Students will learn geological fundamentals and receive practical training in fieldwork, analytical techniques, and the proper use of industry-standard equipment and software. Additionally, students will be exposed to current industry practices, safety protocols, and environmental considerations in mining operations.
The curriculum includes both classroom instruction and hands-on field experience. Coursework consists of an introduction to geology, mining methods and technology, geotechnical engineering, mine safety, environmental management, field and laboratory methods, and computer applications in mining.
Graduates of the two-year Mining Technician program will be well-prepared for entry-level positions in geotechnical and mining companies. Potential career paths include geotechnical technician, mine surveyor, environmental technician, and drilling technician. These roles involve assisting in assessing and analyzing geological conditions for mining projects, conducting surveys to support the planning and development of mining operations, monitoring and managing the environmental impact of mining activities, and supporting drilling operations with geological data collection and analysis.
